Variant Chess Library List

(as at 25 September 2010)

VC Library

This collection of books and magazines relating to chess variants was collected over the years from 1976 when I was publishing Chessics, Variant Chess, and The Games and Puzzles Journal, and during the period from 1997 when I was involved in the British Chess Variants Society (BCVS), at which time it constituted the BCVS Library. Some of the books and magazines were bought by me, others were received as exchanges or for review, and a few were donated by other BCVS members. [Names in square brackets indicate the donor of a work.] Upon closure of the BCVS on 25 September 2010 a few items were transferred to the Library of the British Chess Problem Society (BCPS) but most were retained. In December 2011 the majority of the collection, placed in nine archive boxes, was collected by agents of the English Chess Federation for the purpose of collating the books and magazines for inclusion in the National Chess Library, which is housed at the University Centre, Havelock Street, Hastings. Enquiries wishing to consult the collection should now refer to the NCL. The photo shows the situation of the library in the entrance passage to my flat prior to December 2011. I retained a few items from the collection that were more related to Games and Puzzles or Mathematical Recreations, and these are now included in my separate collection on these subjects.
